Boren Awards provide up to $30,000 for U.S. students to study in Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East, where they can add important international and language components to their educations.

Boren Fellowships provide American graduate students, both at the master's and the doctoral level, with the resources and encouragement they need to acquire skills and experiences in areas of the world critical to the future security of our nation, in exchange for their commitment to seek work in the federal government.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Enrolled in a graduate degree program at an accredited U.S. university
  • Boren Fellows must make a commitment to work in the federal government for a minimum of one year

The Boren Fellowship covers expenses associated with overseas study including tuition, living expenses, books, supplies, equipment, travel expenses, and insurance. In addition, the Boren Fellowship provides limited funding for domestic language study.
